Star Wars #28 - Comic Review

It really feels like we're getting closer to Return of the Jedi in the comics now, as this issue feels like it can't be too far out from the movie. Having moved the time-line up to sit between Episodes 5 & 6, the comics are working in a pretty limited time-span, and can't really go on forever, and that's never felt more true than with this current story arc, that's brought the second Death Star to the Rebels attention.

Last issue we followed a family of Crimson Dawn agents that had worked their way into a secret Imperial facility as they attempted to leave the Empire and find safety with the Rebellion. But after speaking briefly with the Rebels they ended up having to use one of the pre-programmed jump points in the ships memory, which saw them crashing down on Coruscant.

In this issue, Luke Skywaker has a feeling in the force that there's something special about this family, and that he needs to search them out. After a conversation with Hera Syndulla (in which she talks about Kanan!!!), Luke sets out to sneak into the Imperial capital disguised as an officer. I like the moment too where he gets told he looks good in black; setting up for his Jedi look maybe?

The family, who're running through the tunnels beneath Coruscant, are being chased by some pretty frightening looking cops, and even have a run in with some vicious alien creature, before finally being found by Luke. After bringing them back to the fleet, Luke breaks the news that a new Death Star is being built.

This issue moved kind of fast in places, and there were parts of this that felt like they happened pretty quickly and conveniently at times. For example, in one scene Luke is taking about how he plans to track down the family, and in the next he's found them. I kind of would have liked the events of this issue to have been given a bit more time, and I could easily see it being done across more than one issue. Show us how the Rebels got onto Coruscant, show us Luke getting the info to find the family, show more of the family running from the cops. It felt like a bit of a missed opportunity to do more; even if it's still a great issue.

With the Rebels now knowing about the Death Star it seems to be indicating that we're getting close to the end of this part of the story. Of course, they still need to ind out where it is, or where the plans are, so that their Bothan spies can go in and steal them. But then we're going to be into the events of the film. I don't know how much longer we've got, or what else the team might throw at us before it comes to an end, but I'm eager to find out.
