Deathstroke Inc #13 - Comic Review

Originally published on Patreon

So after coming up against dozens of government agents, and Green Arrow, Slade Wilson plummeted off a building to his death. This issue Slade wakes up in the morgue, with the medical examiner about to slice him open.

After chasing down a police car, whist naked, he grabs his gear and gets back onto his mission, to kill the man who made him into more than a normal human. This issue sees Slade meeting back up with Wintergreen, getting back on the trail of his target, and discovering that his wife is pregnant along the way. The issue ends with Slade getting ready to assault the military base where the doctor is being held, but noticing a group of assassins heading in first.

So, this issue covers a lot of ground in a pretty fast amount of time; but despite moving quickly, it manages to do a lot of work at fleshing out the characters of both Slade and Wintergreen, and their relationship with each other. You really get a sense that these two men have known each other for a long time, especially when you see the effect that Slade's 'death' had on his friend.

It's not clear if perhaps this is something of a bit more one-sided friendship, as Slade seems pretty nonchalant about Wintergreen's sadness over thinking Slade had died, whilst his friend was so distraught and worries about telling Slade's family that he drank himself into a stupor. But, this story has shown that Slade has had something of a change in character since being in hospital. He's been getting colder, more detached, and even a little cruel towards the people who are supposed to mean something to him.

I don't know if this is because Slade is in his 'work' frame of mind, and is removing himself from emotions and stopping himself from caring about others, or if it's one of the effects of the experiments that were done to him; but my mind says it's probably the second option, as it seems to have been a gradual shift that has kind of gone along with Slade learning more and more about his new abilities. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was left open to the readers own interpretation.

I had a lot of fun with this issue, and even though some folks would look at it and say that not a huge amount happened because there weren't any action scenes, and it's just Slade getting ready to do more stuff next issue; but it was a really enjoyable insight into the character, and there wasn't a dull moment at any point. Whatever is coming next, it looks set to be an action packed time.
