The final issue of the Back Adam - The Justice Society Files focuses on the character I think most fans are excited to see making their big screen appearance later this month, Doctor Fate.
Other than Hawkman, he's the only returning member of the Justice Society, and with the previous two entries in the series having been focused on the origins of two new heroes, it's nice to end the series on a character who's been around for a while. And it makes a nice bookend with Hawkman having started things off.
The issue deals with Fate donning his helmet after receiving a vision of group of kids summoning something evil, and he ends up turning up to an abandoned cabin in the woods just a moment too late to stop them from their ritual; resulting in one of the teens becoming possessed by a demonic entity.
Fate battles the creature, and with some help from one of the kids, manages to banish it back to hell. Though not before he receives a vision of a future with the Justice Society laying dead at the feet of a mysterious figure (Black Adam) sat upon a throne. This spurs him on to reach out to Hawkman, who was getting ready to come to Fate anyway, and he agrees to help reform the Society.
This is a pretty decent one-shot adventure with the character, and doesn't feel a million miles removed from what you might get with a one-shot focused on the Earth-0 Doctor Fate. The things that stand out here, however, are the stuff that makes this stand out for the film version. For example, we get to see this universe version of the Tower of Fate, which is pretty cool, and this was something that I wasn't really expecting to see here or in the upcoming movie. It being here, however, has me hopeful that perhaps it might make an onscreen appearance, especially thanks to the interesting design it has.
We get a look at a Doctor Fate who's been a hero for a while, who's older and wiser, and seems like he'd be ready for retirement. But he feels the pull of adventure, he misses his time with the Society from years before, and it seems like there's a part of him eager to be a hero again. I'd be interested to see how much of this translates into the film, and if he'll have that kind of energy about him.
The back-up feature also comes to a close this issue, and finally reveals what the whole point of it all was, as it gives us the story for how the archaeologists we see in the trailer come to find Black Adam's tomb. It also shows us why soldiers will end up there, as Intergang have an interest in all of this. It's stuff that adds to the film story, but I imagine it's not going to be missed if you go see the film without having read this.
On a whole, this has been an interesting series, one that has given us some good insight into these versions of the Justice Society, and it seems like it's going to add some fun background to the movie for those that have read it.
