Detective Comics #1064 - Comic Review

Originally published on Patreon

The latest issue of Detective Comics delves a little deeper into the relationship between Bruce and Talia as the sinister Orghams get closer to making their arrival in Gotham City.

The issue opens with a flashback between Damian and Talia, as she trains her son in front of a huge stone monument in the desert. Talia recounts a story about a warrior cursed to wander the desert, battling a demon before having his soul freed by a god. These segments are some of the best looking in the issue, and Rafael Albuquerque and Dave Stewart do some of the best work here, bringing it to life in a way to makes it look distinct from everything else.

It's a great moment between Talia and Damian, but it also acts as something of a metaphor for the relationship between Damian's parents too, with Bruce on his endless quest to fight crime and make the world a better that will ultimately see him lose those around him; much in the same way that the ancient warrior did.

But Talia isn't just around in flashbacks, as she gets to make another appearance in present day Gotham as Bruce comes to realise that she has a part to play in the events that are currently happening.

That being said, it's still not clear exactly what's going on, as Ram V likes to play his cards close to his chest when it comes to the mysteries in his writing. The pieces are definitely moving, but it's still not clear everything that's in play, and exactly what game is being played.

This issue also shines a bit of a light on Bruce and the physical toll that being Batman is taking on his body. Visiting a doctor, we get to see a little bit of the trauma that he's been through in the small fractures and breaks that haven't healed properly over the years. It's nice whenever the books acknowledge that Bruce is just a guy, and that doing what he does isn't easy or kind on his body. Plus the moment of him muttering 'panic attacks my ass' before jumping off a rooftop is quite enjoyable.

The story is getting more and more interesting with each issue, but I'm still not 100% sure that I could tell you exactly what's been going on, and what everything has been about. Whilst I'm hoping that it all comes together at the end, it does leave the month to month issues feeling a bit empty.
