Wonder Woman #792 - Comic Review

Originally published on Patreon

The last issue of Wonder Woman started a new story arc as Diana was sent deep into the Amazon jungle to investigate a group that are harvesting a flower with dangerous properties. Discovering a vast underground lab, Diana also discovers that Cheetah is being held prisoner there, and that after being experimented upon, has been driven into a rage.

This issue kind of resolves a lot of this, as it moves at a very brisk pace. Breaking Cheetah free of her cage, Diana fights her way out of the facility, with Cheetah being very unwillingly rescued, whilst fighting security guards and mercenaries. The lab is set to self-destruct, and the place is destroyed.

And this is just the first half of the book. The rest of the issue sees Diana breaking Cheetah out of her mindless state thanks to the golden lasso, and her team back at Checkmate HQ digging into the background of the group responsible, planning the next op, and Cheetah joining the team for a short while.

It kind of feels like a lot happens over a very short amount of time with this issue, and the book comes across as a bit rushed. I would have been happy with the whole of the issue dealing with Diana getting out of the facility, but this happens very quickly.

The result is an issue that I struggled to connect with. I never felt like I'd had enough time with each story beat or character moment before we'd moved on to the next. It kind of felt like perhaps the team were told they'd been dropped from a six issue story to a four or five, so had to start moving quickly in order to make everything fit. Hopefully this is just me not gelling with the book this month for whatever reason, and the rest of the story will feel more enjoyable.
