Lilly Wachowski Speaks At GLAAD Awards

Filmmaker Lilly Wachowski made her first public appearance at the GLAAD Media Awards last night, where she accepted the award for best drama series for her Netflix show 'Sense8'.

Taking to the stage, Lilly spoke about her own coming out and the role the GLAAD has in the wider LGBT+ community.  She thanked the 'fabulous people at GLAAD' for their help, 'as well as the extremely sensitive and courteous people at the Daily Mail.  Thanks guys,' she added with sarcasm that drew laughter from the crowd.

Lilly came out as transgender last month in a public statement published through Chicago's Windy City Times following threats from a journalist from the British publication The Daily Mail who was going to publicly out her if she did not share her story with them.

On stage she said, 'My sister likes to joke, you can't write this shit.  Where do we find the courage to break free of the boxes of our lives, to transcend and overcome tragedy?  The monsters within and the violence we do to ourselves when we are too afraid to be who we really are.

'And while the ideas of identity and transformation are components of our work, the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love.  Love is a crucial thing for transgender people, it's a tether.'

'When faced with the rather simple proposition of whether you're unlovable, our imagination falters.  Too many of us end up on the wrong side of the existential question of love or oblivion.  And so we ring that bell.  Not just for everyone else's sake but our own.'

Lilly thanked her sister Lana, her parents who were in attendance at the awards, as well as Netflix and the cast and crew of the show.  She ended her speech with the simple message, 'Now get out there and go love with all your fucking might'.

Sense8 has already been renewed for a second series and is currently in production.
